Water Smartweed

Natural History

Water Smartweed is a member of the Buckwheat Family. The plant grows to 6 inches in height and has dark green, shiny, leathery leaves which grow to 6 inches in length on alternating sides of the stalk. The plant grows in wet areas near marches, streams and lakes at elevations between 5000 and 9000 feet.
 

Water Smartweed is also called Swamp Smartweed or Knotweed.

Water Smartweed blooms between July and September and produces a pink flower stalk with a cluster of flowers to 2 inches in length.
