Zela Metalmark Butterfly (Emesis zela)

Natural History

The Zela Metalmark Butterfly is a member of the Riondinidae Family. They are 1 - 1.25 inches wide with a gray-brown forewing which contrasts with the brighter orange-brown hindwing.
 

Males perch in openings in valley bottoms to watch for females.

Zela Metalmark Butterflies are found throughout the central portion of Arizona to the central east and southeast usually along streams and canyons in mountain foothills. Adults fly between February - September.
