Devil Cholla (Opuntia stanlyi)

Natural History

Devil Cholla is a member of the Cactus Family. It grows to 6 inches in height and has cylindrical joints to 1.5 inches in diameter and 6 inches in length. Spines are yellow or tan and grow to 2 inches in length. The cactus grows in sandy areas in plains and on mesas at elevations between 2500-4000 feet.
 

Devil Cholla grows in clumps,  forming mats several yards in diameter.

Devil Cholla blooms between May and June and produces a yellowish to greenish flower to 2 inches in width which is followed by a yellow, spiny fruit to 3 inches in length.
