Yellow Salsify

Natural History

Yellow Salsify is a member of the Sunflower Family. The plant grows to 3 feet in height and has grayish green, grass-like leaves that grasp the stem to 10 inches in length. The plant typically grows in dry areas along roads and in fields at elevations between 3500 - 7000 feet.
 

Yellow Salsify in not native to the US, it was introduced from Europe and has sicne become naturalized.

Yellow Salsify blooms between June - September and produces a bright yellow dandelion-like flower with green bracts that protrude beyond the flower around the margin to 2.5 inches in width. The flower is followed by a large spherical dandelion-like seed head.
